Guy friends: how do you know when they are interested in being more than just friends?

can definitely see the infatuation here .. well you said he's a black and white thinker and he's also a guy which means there isn't too much depth here.. my suggestion TALK TO HIM! dont come right out and say everything you posted here its kinda stalkerish [just joking]. If he's going out of his way to do things like this for you, he might really like you as well or he's gay and you've just become his best buddy .. it could also just be his way of showing you appreciation that you are allowing him to stay with you! this situation is complicated you should really go directly to the source found out where he coming from!
